Ben and Jerry the Musical - Chris Younger

Ben & Jerry:  Who wants ice cream?

All:  We all want ice cream! We all want ice cream!

Ben:  Ice cream is gonna be great there will be no one who denies me!

Jeff & Jack:  No brother, we started denying you the moment you were born.

(stepping in front of them)

Jerry:  Ice cream will make everybody feel good!

(Ben and Jerry step forward)

Ben & Jerry:  There will be no one who will stop us, we will stand on our own. Make our voices heard and make a stand for us.

All:  First we gotta get through this family is-sue between brothers! There will be problems galore. You better watch out, there might be blood.

Jeff:  That doesn’t sound good.

Jack:  Hopefully that won’t be us brother.

All:  You know there will be one who stands in the way of our her-oes.

(Don enters stage right)

Don:  Hello boys.

Ben & Jerry: Hello Don.

Jerry:  Here to gloat about your new bike business?

Don:  No. I just wanted to say you got your work cut out for you today.

All:  We hope that the good friends can stand against this bully.

(group one) He makes Shakespear write,

(group two) He makes Will write that play.

All:  He makes the heroes frett. WATCH OUT! Oh the places you will go, when you are on your own and stand alone. There will be hope and light in times of dark, there will be ice cream in the cone, but most of all there will be friends to praise you wherever you go. You know there will be help whenever you need it! Need it!

Ben:  So let the story unfold.

All:  Right before your eyes! You will see light and dark, music and quiet, quiet.

Ben & Jeff & Jack:  You will need friends and family where the wind takes you. Who knows where the wind will take you.

All:  We need to write a story about two unfor-tunate bro-thers who have a tragedy bur-den on their shoul-ders. So let it tell itself, you know there is a way to hear the pain of the family.

Ben & Jerry:  So let the story start!

All:  Let it START! Let it start.

Scene 1 act 1

Jerry’s house

Jerry:  Why do we always end up losing all our friends to that pitiful Don?

Ben:  Well Jerry, I think it's because we try so hard to beat him. First the lemonade stand we had, then-

Jerry:  Yes I know, the time when we tried to go around and sell magazines and chocolate. But Don ruined both of those businesses we had.

Ben:  Well what about the time we wrote books and made a small library and sold them for a dollar each.

Jerry:  You are missing the point. Ben, I thought you were my friend. Come on Who’s side are on? Are you here to make a fool out of me?

Ben:  No I-

Jerry:  You need to understand I will go through these hard times with or without you. You are my friend and I wish it was with. But clearly we don’t always get what we want. Now do we?

Ben:  Listen I know you are upset but there needs to be a way to stop Don once and for all. You know? How hard is it to stop,

Both:  One man from his evil works? Why can’t we ever get a break?

Ben:   There must be some way to fly up above his head!

Jerry:  Wait, I got it! We make some sort of sports station! Don hates sports.

(radio plays in other room)

Mike over the radio:  And here we are to celebrate this new occasion! There will be a pizza party held in the park at four o’clock on Saturday. That is four o’clock Saturday at the park. Call Frank Livingston for any questions.

Ben & Jerry:  That’s it!

Ben:  Wait why? What is the special occasion he mentioned?

Jerry:  Well I guess we will find out.

(Both exit)

Scene 2 act 1

Ben’s bedroom

(Ben enters stage right reading a journal)

Ben:  There must be a way to know what Don will fear so much he will leave us alone.

(Jack enters stage right)

Jack:  Ben. you have a friend at the door. Don’t you thin- and he is gone. Come out from under the bed Ben.

Ben:  Who is it?

(Don enters stage right)

Don:  Why Ben it's me. Do you not know your own friend? Thank you Jack. That will do.

(Jack exits stage right)

Come on Ben.

Ben:  Go away you idiot.

(Ben runs out stage right)

(Don Chases him out)

(lights go out)

Scene 3 act 1

Jerry’s hose: the kitchen

(lights back up on the kitchen in Jerry’s house)

Jerry:  I am sorry Ben. I wish I could be there to help you.

Ben:  No, you don’t know how hard it is to deal with Don. Especially when  he is in your house.  You don’t know how hard it is to stand alone against him. You don’t know what he will be doing next, or where he will go.

Jerry:  Yes I do. When you are friends with each other you always help each other. I made a vow to stick by your side, when the going gets rough. I will be of help when I can and where I can. So let me help you. Please?

Ben:  No. I need to do this on my own. Where were you when he tortured me in my house? I need support when I need it.

Both:  You need to know I vowed to help and support you if you needed it! So watch out Don, because the rodeo of friends is ROOOOOLIN’ IIIIIIIIN.

(James and Mary enter stage left.)

James:  Jerry, Ben you said I could help you.

Mary:  James, come on. They are trying to make some secret plan.

James:  Oh, okay, don’t let me stand in the way.

Jerry:  DAD GO AWAY!

James:  Jeez. calm down.

(James and Mary exit stage left.)

Ben:  Maybe it could be good to get some-

Jerry:  No. we will be fine on our own. Because, when I grow up I will be brave enough to work without my family, be bold enough to step out, step out into the sun. When I grow up I will not be relying on anyone else to help me with my problems. Because I am tap tap tapping on the glass, waving through a window, like you could fall but no one would hear. I don’t care if I am alone or if I have a friend, it all depends on me trying to save me.

Ben:  I understand. If you don’t want help that’s fine by me but if you do that’s also fine by me.

Jerry:  ARE YOU KIDDING! Of course I need you! You are my only friend that didn’t think I was a fool! Who didn’t think I was stupid, who didn’t think about me being me.

Both:  Maybe we both are crazy in a way no one can understand.

Ben:  Except us. Just two friends, who spent the day looking at the view from that little orchard down by the bay.

( they hug, lights go down.)

Scene 4 act 1

Ben’s kitchen

Jack:  Okay, fine if you want to go on some dangerous mission don’t let me stop you. I am just saying, you are probably going to fail. Or die.

Jeff:  Jack stop. Ben, I am coming with you.

Ben:  Umm… No, that's fine. Besides Jerry will be there with me.

Jeff:  Who’s Jerry?

Ben:  WHAT! You don't know who Jerry is? How could-

Jeff:  BEN! I will come with you for the first part then I will leave.

Ben:  Fine! I guess you can come with me.

Jeff:  Thank you. If you don’t want to, you don’t have to talk to me at all.

Ben:  Whatever.

Jeff:  Hey, come on now. Don’t let me be in your way.

Ben:  You were in my way since the minute you were born!

Jeff:  Well don’t let me stop you, I don’t want to see you sad, we will live in peace and harmony. You and me.

Ben:  What about Jack?

Jeff:  UGHH! You know what I mean. We will be the awesome trio, the brothers who will be stepping in time, over the rooftops. We will be there for each other.
